Ian Thomas was the Royal fashion designer to HM The Queen and produced some of the most iconic designs of the 1970’s and 1980’s. Here at Blondes Fine Art in Hertfordshire we are delighted to be able to offer a collection of some 40 original signed design drawings for dresses , hats and coats . Many are designs for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II , her ladies in waiting and other members of the court . Others are for prominent celebrities of the the 1980’s
For more than three decades Ian Thomas was trusted with creating outfits for the most famous woman in the world. Mr Thomas, a bachelor, died in 1993 and left his home and collection to the florist he visited every day to get a fresh flower for his lapel whenever he worked at his London studio.
Mr Thomas, was apprentice to Norman Hartnell and he helped to create the Queen’s coronation dress in 1953 and would later design the blue chiffon outfit she wore for Charles and Diana’s wedding, We are particularly delighted to be able to offer the original signed artwork for this design . This is a unique opportunity to acquire a piece of timeless royal memorabilia depicting possibly the most acclaimed design by Ian Thomas and certainly the most recognisable one .
The Queen was very clearly very fond of Ian, and held him in such high regard that she gave him a horse and one of her corgis. He was a keen horseman and regularly competed at dressage events so clearly had a great deal in common with the Royal family’s equine interests.
It was common for him to attend Buckingham Palace for fittings and on one occasion he found the Queen her on her hands and knees picking up hundreds of pins she had knocked over.
