Wanted - We are currently looking to purchase work by this artist so do please contact us if you are looking to sell.

John Caple was born and raised in Somerset and his deep rooted association with the area has honed his painting . He has a truly unique style making his work easily identifiable which is, for us, a mark of a great artist.

The images are strong , appear simple yet highly complex and leave you hankering after a simple rural life . They often relate to his extended family members, reflect on the past and a true sense of belonging. John explains that his favourite seasons are Autumn and Winter and also how he enjoys the time that painting allows him to spend in his own company. He enjoys the extreme bareness of the trees and landscape coupled with the early darkness of the season.

John Caple starts his works from an abstract with dark and light to get the shape of the artwork, he then uses strong red paints to construct the outline of the images . So while the paintings end up mainly black and white the strong colours behind add to the intensity of the white and darkness of the black.

Local stories and the bleakness of the Mendips have influenced his work and he paints about the relationship between the people and the land of Somerset, but it stretches back into history giving a feeling of timelessness . He tells stories of folk law and historical writings and he researches the subjects that he paints .

The paintings celebrate Englishness while focusing on the small area of Somerset and the wild birds, crows and owls together with the horses , farm workers and white washed buildings

Predominately self taught art has been his life and he can’t recall a time when he didn’t paint . He admires artists such as Samuel Palmer, John Nash and Stanley Spencer .

John Caple has built up a large loyal following and we love having his work both in the gallery and our home.
