This rare work is the last Royal Academy Summer exhibition submission by Lucy Kemp- Welch and as such is a very significant work .
It was initially sold to Walter Blundell who owned a department store in Luton called Blundell Brothers . A highly successful businessman who upon his death bequeathed the painting to his niece who had looked after him and his home . She moved to Canada in her later life and the painting remained in the same family until being acquired by ourselves for our personal collection.
The original receipt , signed by Lucy , shows it to have been purchased at the R.A. Summer exhibition for the sum of £75 (including copyright)
In the accompanying letters she thanks him for the purchase and says ‘ I HAVE JUST BEEN MAKING SOME STUDIES AND SKETCHES , IN THOSE BEECH WOODS, THIS LAST WEEK, BUT IN SPRING DRESS - SO BEAUTIFUL WITH BLUEBELLS AND SPRING FLOWERS ALL ACROSS THE CLEARING’.
