This post card showing Lucy Kemp - Welch on the front , was part of the collection of documentation that came from her family together with the collection of original drawings and oils that we recently acquired. Painting and drawing was clearly a passion for her and the way she draws the foreshortened image of a heavy horse is without equal . It is her ability to take the quickly made and highly accurate sketch from an encounter in the New Forrest to a scaled up exhibition oil on canvas and do so without loosing a sense of moment that we particularly like. This means that you can own an oil, watercolour or drawing and they all have the same ‘Lucy Kemp-Welch ‘ feel of the movement.
We have been awaiting an update on the progress of the examination and conservation of the album of works, that we mentioned in part one of this series of blogs and can today share the early results with all you Kemp-Welch fans .
We entrusted the collection with Nicholas Burnett at Museum Conservation Services located at the Imperial War Museum , Duxford and he reports that the collection is in very good condition and requiring minimal conservation. The works are being removed from the album to prevent any further deterioration to the paper and the extraction has revealed some interesting additional images on the back of some drawings . This is not a surprise to us as we have handling many of her work previously and the drawings often have additional images verso . We hope that we will be able to reveal some additional images in the early part of next year so do keep checking back to our blog pages for an update .
